Gacha Character Design: Augustus

Introduction

In my younger years I did not consider Mobile Gaming to be something that would take off… and heck, was I wrong, BIG TIME!

It all started from simplistic games like Bejeweled, Angry Birds, and Candy Crush, however as mobile devices grew in power and prevalence, things changed. We now have full on MMOs, Action Games, Visual Novels, and More. It’s WILD!

I rarely played mobile games, however around the end of the main COVID-19 Pandemic in 2022 I came across a game called Dislyte, and it hooked me for the next year or two; so much so, that I ended up designing a character for the game myself.

I had planned to use this when applying for jobs in the mobile game market, but things got away from me and I never got to show it off fully. So, I have put together a 2025/2026 presentation of my design process for the character here!

In this presentation I will explain some basic game details and terminology, however instead of explaining every aspect of Dislyte, you can read about the game at the following links if you want to dive deeper into the mechanics:

You can also download the PDF for the character, without the presentation itself, using either the button at the top of the page, or below this introduction.

01. Concepting Augustus

01. Coming up with a Concept

All the characters in this game, called Espers, are all in some way linked to Deities or Mythological Entities. The majority in the game right now are Asian, however it also has ones from cultures like the Egyptians and Scandinavians.

I wanted to introduce something more on the culture-agnostic side of things, by introducing a purely Mythological set of Espers based on the Cthulhu Mythos. This is where I arrived on starting with Agustus, and having him embody Cthulhu.

After coming up with the basic concept for Augustus, I took to the old faithful place many designers go when looking for inspiration… Pinterest.

02. Putting a Face to a Name

I was already designing a Cthulhu Mythos game myself, so I had a lot of images saved to boards already, so it was pretty easy to find a handful of ones that I believed would be a good fit for the pre-production images of Augustus, before a real artist would get involved to make his final artwork for the game.

Handsome chap, isn’t he? I envision him as a Cult Leader under the guise of a Religious Leader. Which isn’t a dig at anyone real… anyone at all… honestly…

02. Designing Augustus

03. Esper Profile

Following along with how Espers were designed back in 2022 when I was playing a lot, I wrote his Esper Profile.

Like a lot of characters in Cthulhu Mythos stories, Augustus is actually being manipulated by the Star Gods; beings of great power, isn’t in his right mind, and is determined to spread their influence far and wide.

I’m sure this will turn out just fine for everyone involved…

04. Gameplay & In-Game Mechanics

Once I’d got a handle on Augustus’ personality and profile, I set about designing his in-game abilities.

I decided that as the embodiment of Cthulhu in Dislyte, his abilities should have some tentacle-action in them, so his Basic Ability covers that, while his other abilities are more themed around the dark depths of the ocean where Cthulhu lies dreaming in R’lyeh.

I think it turned out pretty well overall, and would fit right in amongst the other Espers… before turning them to the side of the Star Lords! Ah-hah-hahaha!

05. Final Designer Notes

These were the notes I wrote back in 2022 while/after designing Augustus.

I have not made any real alterations to his design since then, or these notes. The Slides and notes on this page were all written in 2025/2026 to explain the design process I went through.
